The Toyota RAV4, the first ever compact crossover SUV, combines the best features of an SUV with those of a compact car. The RAV4 (which stands for Recreational Active Vehicle with Four-Wheel Drive) was first offered in North America in 1996.
The RAV4’s innovation combines SUV-like cargo capacity, higher visibility and the option for full-time four-wheel drive with the fuel economy, handling and maneuverability of a more compact car. The Toyota RAV4 was named the “Automobile of the Year” by Automobile Magazine in 1997 and is available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
This crossover SUV is popular in many markets throughout the world and can be found in North America, Mexico, Japan, Australia and even Saudi Arabia. Stateside, the Rav4 is available in several trim levels including the LE, XLE, XLE Hybrid and SE. Four models are available to fit every budget, from the base model at $24,910 MSRP to the fully-loaded model at $29,985 MSRP.
The fourth-generation RAV4 has been offered since 2013 as a five-door wagon. The Toyota RAV4 recently reached a new peak of popularity with more than 350,000 being sold in the United States in 2016 alone, marking the model’s highest sales in a single calendar year.
