Under the Hood
As before, the 2021 Prius is powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine with two motor-generators through a sophisticated continuously variable transmission (CVT). The Prius is able to launch solely on battery power under most conditions, and then the gas engine activates as needed once underway. This serves to reduce fuel consumption and deliver a smooth driving experience.
